KEY ACHIEVEMENTS

Play It Forward

APB hosted our first “Play It Forward” Spring Fling on Tues. April 26. We played games, won prizes, and raised awareness for APB. KAITLYN’S STORY
Finding Freedom

My name is Kaitlyn. I’m 21 years old and at an age when most young people are looking forward to all that life has to offer. My path has looked very different.

I was diagnosed with Lupus at just 12 years old. By 14, I began experiencing significant challenges with mobility and cognitive function. Today, I live with paralysis and use a wheelchair every day.

A few years ago, my younger brother discovered a new passion—Adaptive Pickleball (APB). After every session, he’d come home energized, talking non-stop about how much fun he was having, how incredible the coaches were, and how much he wanted me to join him. Week after week, he’d plead: “Please come. You’ll love it!” Eventually, I agreed—mostly to quiet him and my mom who were cheering me on.

When we first arrived, I stayed on the sidelines, unsure and unmotivated. But something shifted. Sandy and the APB coaches gently encouraged me to give it a try. I wasn’t ready to move into a sports chair yet, but I cautiously began playing from my wheelchair. To my surprise, I found myself enjoying the game. Eventually, I agreed to try a sports wheelchair—and that’s when everything truly changed. I finished my first play day with a smile I tried to hide from my family… but inside, something had clicked.

I had found my place.

Over time, I kept coming back. What started as reluctant participation transformed into something I looked forward to with excitement. My depression began to lift. I had discovered a space where I was not defined by my limitations, but celebrated for my courage. I found friends who understood me. I found connection. I found joy.

Today, I’ve competed in multiple tournaments, thanks to APB. Even more meaningful, I’ve become a peer coach helping others with mobility challenges find the same freedom and confidence I discovered on the court.

APB is more than just a sports program—it’s my second family. It’s where I belong. And even on hard days, if my mom says there’s an APB play day, I’m the first one getting ready.

I don’t know where I would be today without the opportunities APB has given me. Because of APB, I’ve found purpose, healing, and happiness again. Thank you APB!!!!
